ISCA CEO, Mr Lee Fook Chiew, was quoted in The Business Times on the question of "What curriculum (or other) changes are needed to better prepare Singapore's university graduates for the new economy and the future of work?" This is what he has to share:
To thrive in the new economy, individuals must embrace new technologies and adopt a digital mindset. More importantly, they must be willing to update their skills and acquire new skills continually over time. This will enable them to be versatile and adaptable in an era of constant and rapid change.
Within the accountancy profession for instance, accountants are acquiring digital skills such as robotic process automation, artificial intelligence and dashboard reporting. They are also learning to work with new platforms, systems and tools in areas such as billing, payment, data management and customer intelligence.
Accountancy graduates are encouraged to further their education in specialisation areas, to enhance their skill set and complement their accountancy training. Apart from technical proficiencies, educators should also emphasise soft skills such as critical thinking, business acumen and emotional intelligence. New fields and areas of knowledge will continue to emerge over time, and we must all be prepared to be lifelong learners.
