ISCA Council Member Professor Chan Yoke Kai, has been appointed to International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)’s new International Panel on Accountancy Education (IPAE), together with twenty-one other key executives and leaders from the global accountancy space. Professor Chan is among seven of the panel members from Asia Pacific, and is the only representative from ASEAN. He will serve a two-year term.
In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, professional accountants increasingly must possess multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge and demonstrate competencies beyond traditional accounting. In response to the challenges of a rapidly changing economic landscape and how current macro trends have direct implications for the global accountancy profession’s approach to education and professional development, the IPAE was established to develop international education standards and guidance, provide strategic advice on advancing accountancy education; facilitate access to expertise and resources, and advocate quality education for professional accountants.
Besides serving in the public interest and contributing to the area of professional accounting education, participation in the Panel will work towards ISCA’s strategic priority of raising our global prominence and elevating the ISCA brand internationally. In addition, the Panel provides more avenues to expand ISCA’s network with countries beyond ASEAN. This, in turn, would reinforce ISCA’s position as a leading professional accountancy body on the global stage.
About Professor Chan Yoke Kai
Professor Chan is currently the Advisor to the Accountancy Programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) providing strategic direction for the faculty including continuously reviewing the relevance of the accountancy curriculum. He is an academician who was heavily involved in Singapore’s accountancy education since 1981 and held senior and management roles in various universities. With his wide and diverse experience being an academia, Professor Chan's goal is to help IFAC address evolving accountancy education needs, in hope to build a pool of future-ready professional accountants.
Prior to joining academia, he had ten years of industry experience as a corporate accountant and internal auditor. Professor Chan served in various industry and professional committees which included the Education Committee of the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) and the Singapore Accounting Commission (SAC) Learning & Assessment Committee. The latter was the pioneer Committee which laid out the foundation for the implementation of the Singapore CA Qualification (SCAQ) in 2013 and included developing policies and procedures for the SAC Professional Examinations. He had also sat in the SCAQ Practical Experience Work Group. Professor Chan is also keenly attuned to lifelong learning which is a national agenda for Singapore. He played an instrumental role in facilitating the development of the ISCA-SUSS Business Analytics Certification Programme which enables accountants to deepen their skill sets in data analytics.The ISCA 2018/2019 Annual Report, “Future Fit”, has garnered a Silver Award for design excellence at the 2019 ARC Awards.
The ARC Awards competition is organised by MerComm Inc, an independent awards organisation with a focus on defining excellence in the Communications field.
The judges are leaders in the fields of investor relations, writing, design and photography from around the globe. Each annual report submission is scored based on creativity, clarity, effectiveness, and excellence. The awards given are Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honors, in that order of importance, and only one of each award will be given in each classification/category.
The theme of the annual report is “Future Fit”. With motifs of fitness and sports, the theme centres on the idea of a triathlete preparing for competition. To perform at peak levels in this physically and mentally demanding endurance sport, triathletes must undergo rigorous training and adequate preparation. Likewise, ISCA supports our members through specialisation pathways, CPE courses, seminars and conferences as well as guidance materials and publications to ensure they are equipped to perform at their best and ready for the changing business environment.
